  • More about Seymore

The 'first-ever mascot' in the history of World Exposition's...!

Humble beginnings with the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition. Mr. Magnanimous, the Original, One, and Only...Seymore...!

I traveled the world plugging the 1984 New Orleans World's Fair. I stumped all over Europe and while in France, I was thrown out of the Louvre..! Made a big splash at the 1984 GOP Convention in Dallas and I rubbed, er, limbs with numerous Chiefs of State. Once while in Washington DC at the White House, I danced with the wives of Russian Diplomats. That really made Billy Joel come around.

    Ahhh, those were the days...!

For those who do not recognize me, I am 'Seymore D Fair'. I was the first-ever Fair Mascot in the history of World Expositions. My name was a result of a contest and derived from the quote 'See More of the Fair'. This contest was hosted by "Time Saver" and the winner's name was Susan Shambra, a computer operator for a local insurance company .

As it pertains to New Orleans, the local dialect spoken is very distinct and referred to as 'Yat'. Derivatives can be heard though out the region, from our famous hello greeting of 'Where Ya At', to cheering for the New Orleans Saint's chanting 'Who Dat' (as in who's that going to beat those Saints!). Hence, the Yat translation of 'See More of the Fair' becomes 'Seymore D' Fair'...! (A.k.a. sometimes referred to as Seymour D Fair for folks who just can't get it right...!)

I have been on hiatus for several years, but with some prodding by many fans, I have decided to come out of retirement this year to celebrate my 30th Birthday and the 30th Anniversary of the 1984 World's Fair. Prior to my retirement in 1991, I was engaged in numerous community causes, most notably Substance Free Lifestyles (Critters & Kids 'Say No to Drugs'), Animal Welfare (Critter Care on Parade), and Positive Behavior programs to name a few.

Seymore D’ Fair (a.k.a. Seymour D. Fair) is the funny cartoon & costume character who was the official mascot of the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition. His witty name is derived from the N’Awlins “Yat” phrase “See more of the fair”. A cartoon creation of artist Robert Whitney[1] and Gary Goddard[2], celebrated theme park and Walt Disney costume designer, he is not your ordinary cartoon and mascot character. Wow, he had the unique distinction of being the “World’s 1st-Ever” character mascot in the history of Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) World’s Fairs & Expositions. Hi magical and whimsical personality contributed greatly to him becoming the most recognizable World's Fair mascot in the modern age of International Expositions and World’s Fairs. As a result, he has garnered numerous honors and special recognition on a local, state, national, and international level. His exemplary contributions to Louisiana and World Expositions earned me an exhibition & induction into the Louisiana State Museum, the Smithsonian Institute – National Museum of American History as well as being appointed “Goodwill Ambassador” for the State of Louisiana.
